Austin Chiang is currently a junior at Duke University majoring in Biology with a minor and Music. Though he was born in Southern California, Austin moved to Taipei, Taiwan at age 10, where he attended Taipei American School until graduation from high school. In Taipei American School, Austin was both President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and a member of the National Honor Society. Austin served as the concertmaster for two years of the Upper School Orchestra then, and represented the school in violin performance for four years in the annual IASAS Cultural Convention at sister schools in Manila, Bangkok, Singapore, and Jakarta. After 17 years of the playing the violin, Austin continues his passion for music by serving as Assistant Concertmaster of the Duke Symphony Orchestra, with which he performed a solo performance in 2005, at the Kaiserling Cancer Research Center in Beaufort, South Carolina and has gone on to give a private recital each semester at Duke. In 2004, Austin also had the opportunity to perform for the President of Taiwan, Mr. Chen Shui-bian.

Austin has been active as a member of the Taiwanese Students Association, Red Cross for Kids, Pet-I-Care, as a counselor for the SAFE program, former secretary of the Languages House, and an Employer Ambassador for Duke. He is currently conducting research involving misfolded protein aggregates with Dr. Tso-Pang Yao in the Department of Pharmacology/Cancer Biology. He intends to pursue a career in medicine after graduation.
