Stephanie Moon

2013-2014 Deputy Funding Officer

Stephanie is currently a freshman undergraduate at Caltech majoring in Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Computer Science.

Through InnoWorks, Stephanie hopes to proliferate her passion for science to younger students. Such passion for science and engineering developed during Stephanie's high school years. In particular, two activities she loved to get involved in were the National Honors Society and Science Olympiad. She found enjoyment in the variety of volunteering experiences offered through NHS ranging from wrapping shoeboxes for Toys for Tots to planting trees in local parks. As the president of the club, she elevated academics in the community by reorganizing her high school's tutoring system and connecting the club members to nearby elementary and middle schools for regular classroom assistance. In parallel with NHS, Stephanie also loved Science Olympiad for its fun and collaborative approach to learning science topics not taught in classrooms. Her favorite moments were preparing for and participating in State and National Tournaments with her teammates.

To explore science in the professional world, Stephanie interned in a lab at the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University during her junior year of high school. Her research focused on the methylation status of a locus in bronchial epithelial cells. Curious about other fields of study, she also conducted research on aerospace acoustics at Georgia Tech Research Institute's Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems lab the following year as a senior. During the summer of 2014, Stephanie will be working as an Undergraduate Research Fellow in Dr. Julia Greer's materials science lab at Caltech.

During her free time, Stephanie enjoys being active. She has transitioned from doing Tae Kwon Do as a third degree black belt to fencing foil as part of Caltech's Fencing Team. She also continues to play the violin in a chamber group on campus. Last but not least, her favorite activities remain as seizing new adventures like sky diving, rock climbing, and trying new cuisine with friends and family.
