Attabey Rodriguez-Benitez

Curriculum Director-2018
I am a pre-doctoral student in the Chemical Biology Program. Throughout my career I have had a variety of mentors that have contributed in multiple ways to my scientific inquiry. I am co-mentored by Prof. Alison R.H. Narayan and Prof. Janet L. Smith doing protein engineering, biocatalysis, and structural biology. However, I wish I would have had a high school mentor who would have encouraged my dreams.

As a first generation college student, I had to struggle virtually on my own for what I wanted and still want. Therefore, I would like to be a model for young women who may not have considered science as a career. I would love to mentor girls from underrepresented communities, and raise awareness of research opportunities that will give them the chance to further engage in science. As a current member of InnoWorks organization, I will recruit young Hispanic women who may not see science as a career option. Like the mentors I have met, I hope my success and enthusiasm lead other young women of all backgrounds to think of scientific inquiry as an attainable goal.
