Adam Kirk graduated with honors from DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, MD in 2005. Currently he is currently a sophomore in aerospace engineering at the University of Maryland in College Park. He is also a member of the University of the Maryland Men’s Rugby Football Club.
During his years at DeMatha, Adam participated and was a leader in several different groups. He was a member of the Valois Chapter of the National Honor Society, DeMatha Science Scholars, and Vice President of the Campus Ministry Organization. In addition, he was captain of the cross country team his senior year and was a member of the founding men’s rugby football club.
Adam has also spent a great deal of time in science research related internships. In the summer of 2004, Adam was an intern under Dr. Larry Sikora at the United States Department of Agriculture Animal Manure and By-Products Lab. While there, he conducted experiments in a soils laboratory to obtain and analyze data on the nitrogen and oxygen content of soil and compost samples. In the summer of 2006, Adam was an intern for Dr. Richard McCuen at the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Maryland. While there he designed science labs for junior high school students, and worked with Dr. McCuen to write a published research paper titled, “Outlier Detection in Multivariate Hydrologic Data.”
