Boston University Chapter

Message from the Director:

We are pleased to offer the first InnoWorks summer program in Boston this year at Boston University. The program will last from August 10th, 2009 through August 14th, 2009 and will be centered around the Making Sense of Senses curriculum. We will hold the program at the state-of-the-art Photonics Center at Boston University, which is located at 8 Saint Mary’s St Boston, MA.

The Making Sense of Senses curriclum challenges students to explore the human senses, the science behind them and how they help us perceive the world. Rather than learning in a classroom-like environment, students will be grouped into teams and will tackle real-world problems with the help of a college mentor. It is our hope that this hands-on approach will get students excited about science.

As one of the first InnoWorks chapters in Boston, we look forward to tapping into the vast body of college students in Boston, and channel the energy of passionate college volunteers to mentor the next generation of scientists and engineers. We are in the process of partnering with several Boston-area companies and Boston Public Schools to create opportunities for talented youth in Boston.

InnoWorks at Boston University would not be possible without the support of Boston University and its faculty. In particular we would like to thank our faculty adviser, Professor Adrian Whitty (BU Chemistry Dept) for his enthusiasm and guidance in getting InnoWorks of the ground. We would also like to thank Mrs. Cynthia Brossman, for providing organizational support through the LERNet office at BU, which coordinates a number of summer programs out of the University. Finally, we would like to thank Professor Michael Ruane of the Electrical Engineering Department for agreeing to provide us with space in the Photonics Center.
