Duke University Chapter

Message from the Director: Edward (Yao-Wen) Cheng

We are excited to announce that this year's InnoWorks summer program at Duke University will be from August 16th, 2010 through August 20th, 2010 at Duke's Engineering Quad in Hudson Hall. Students attending the camp will explore the five human senses through our innovative and hands-on "Making Sense of Senses" curriculum.

Last year's program at Duke University was unfortunate but turned into a blessing. By all accounts it should have been impossible to rescue, but for the sake of our students, the InnoWorks community came together and made sure that the 2009 InnoWorks summer camp at Duke University would not be canceled. InnoWorks leaders from all over the world, including volunteers from Harvard, MIT, University of Pennsylvania, College of The Bahamas, University of Maryland, University of Pittsburg, University of Connecticut, and Duke University, sacrificed their summer at a moment's notice to gather into Durham, NC to help resuscitate the program. Many paid their own way to work with passionate local Duke community advocates to make sure deserving kids have the opportunity to benefit from InnoWorks.

For this unbelievably altruistic act, we would like to extend our gratitude to all the dedicated volunteers for their commitment to the InnoWorks program. Because of them and the wonderful young InnoWorkers, the 2009 InnoWorks Summer Camp at Duke University was a huge success.

Duke University's InnoWorks Summer Camp would not have been possible without the support of Duke University's Engineering Department and Residence Life and Housing for providing donations, a venue, and accommodations for our volunteers. Furthermore, materials and supplies for the camp were made possible with generous contributions from our corporate sponsors GlaxoSmithKline and Cisco Systems. Finally, in-kind donations from various food vendors in the area, including Papa Johns, Panda Express, McDonald's, and Alpine Bagels provided our students with fuel to spark their curiosity and kindle their passion the sciences.

We would also like to thank a number of people for standing by Duke InnoWorks throughout the course of the year. Dr. Gary Ybarra has played an integral part of Duke InnoWorks as a faculty advisor and an advocate for our program within the Duke Pratt School of Engineering. Ms. Susan Clifton has been an integral community leader who has helped us maintain an open channel between local middle schools and potential students. And finally, we would like to thank Ms. Kathy Kay for agreeing to provide and secure an appropriate venue for our summer camp.

The staff and mentors of Duke InnoWorks can't wait to get started with the 2010 summer camp. We hope that our focus and dedication will translate to yet another successful camp that will represent a critical juncture in the lives of our students- students who will one day become the leaders in the sciences, engineering and medicine.
