MIT Chapter

Message from the MIT Chapter Co-Directors:

Greetings from the MIT InnoWorks Chapter!

We will be hosting our third annual InnoWorks program this summer, beginning August 13th and ending August 17th.

MIT InnoWorks provides a free week-long science and engineering camp for underprivileged middle school students in the Boston and Cambridge areas. We have hosted about 40 students these past two years combined, and we hope to serve that many students this year alone. Our goal is to provide students with the opportunity to learn about Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEM2) fields through exciting and interactive activities outside of the traditional school environment.

We have put together a great executive board for the 2012 InnoWorks Program. Juhee Bae and Jennifer Bustamante will be Co-Directors, and Iris Sheu will be serving as Deputy Director. Angela Zhang and Sarah Weiss are in charge of Operations and Curriculum; Janet Lin, Frank Pena, and Ehsan Izadmehr make up our Student and Mentor Recruitment Team, and Ciara Lomax handles Finance. We are a diverse group of students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, and representing a multitude of majors from Civil & Environmental Engineering to Brain & Cognitive Sciences.

We will be planning the activities and missions for this year based on the Making Sense of Senses curriculum. Students will learn about all five senses through an array of hands-on experiments and activities while engaging in friendly competition against other middle school teams.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors from last year. Each of our sponsors has shown an immeasurable amount of commitment to the creation of opportunities and confidence in the lives of our students. Thank you to Undergraduate Advising and Academic Programming and the Dean of Undergraduate Education for their generous donations, and thank you to the MIT Biology Department for providing a great location to hold our camp as well as access to an amazing lab space. Also, thank you to all the middle school staff and faculty that have worked with us these past two years.

A big thank you goes to Ambar Mehta and Shubhi Goyal, the former directors of the MIT Chapter, and to our previous board members, camp mentors, and staff whose hard work and leadership paved the way for our program's success.

Finally, our sincerest apprciation to all our students, parents and community educational leaders. You have given so much to all of us and you are the reason our program is successful. We are committed to work with you to make the 2012 workshop better than ever!

Join us for InnoWorks at MIT this year, where learning science and engineering is all about fun! If you have any questions about the upcoming program, want to get involved, or want to make a donation, please feel free to contact us at mit@innoworks.org. We look forward to working with you!

Sincerely,

Jennifer L. Bustamante and Juhee Bae
