University of California, Los Angeles Chapter

Message from the 2015 Directors:

Welcome to InnoWorks at UCLA!

2015 is a big year for Innoworks at UCLA because it marks the five-year presence of our organization on campus. Over the course of four years, we have worked hard to provide a learning atmosphere that nurtures curiosity for the natural world, and build critical thinking skills that are essential to mastering fields in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine.

Students receive one-on-one attention from mentors, and although most mentors are aware of how experiments are "supposed" to turn out, there are always a few challenges and unexpected phenomena that turn up in each experiment, to the delight and surprise of our campers. This is more like the challenges in the "real world" that science faces each day, and it is tackling these kinds of problems with our students that we find our most memorable experiences.

And so, along the course of one week, lasting bonds are formed among mentors and students that endure the progression of camp. We hope to instill the idea that science is not a hobby or a mere subject, but a way of thinking that can be integrated into every part of our lives.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals who helped to make Innoworks at UCLA 2015 possible. First of all, the students who participated and their supportive parents, without whom there would be no program. We recognize the parents who continually make sacrifices for their children, just so their children can have a brighter future. Next, the teachers and administrators of LAUSD, oftentimes unsung heroes, in helping us reach out to the greater LA area and being personally involved in their students' education beyond the classroom setting. We would also like to show our appreciation for the UCLA community & neighborhood, who have, without fail, provided facilities, equipment and donations to ensure the program runs smoothly.

Lastly, we extend our gratitude to Dr. Neil Garg of the UCLA Chemistry & Biochemistry Department, our faculty advisor. His advising and active involvement in community service, amidst all his duties as an outstanding organic chemistry professor, inspires us all to be better leaders.

Sincerely,
Regina Ahn and Rena Wang
